The surge of Rick Santorum: Sizzle or fizzle?

For months during the series of seemingly infinite Republican presidential debates, Rick Santorum played a quiet, almost anonymous role. However, in a rapid change of circumstances, Santorum has recently surged to the top of the leader board and virtually tied with Mitt Romney in Iowa’s caucus on Jan. 3, 2012.

He fell short of victory by a mere eight votes.

Is Santorum’s strong showing in Iowa a sign that he will be a serious challenger to Romney for the Republican nomination — or is he merely the next in a long line of “anti-Romney” candidates unable to sustain momentum over the long haul?
